Below (and in the menu at left) you will find links to a variety of pages of interest to readers. Some of these pages are still "under construction"; some will be added to or modified on a regular basis. So feel free to come back frequently to see what's new.
Web Resources: Here are some World Wide Web resources of interest to the avid reader.
"From the Stacks": Every couple of weeks, the Bay City Times publishes "Words From the Stacks"; articles written by library staff members about the different categories of books (and non-books) in the library's collections.
"Books Like...": This is a series of booklists for folks who've found that they like a certain kind of book or author and are looking for other "books like this...".
NoveList: Your Guide to Fiction: This online service is a great resource for readers. It allows you to use a favorite author or title as a "template" to locate other books of interest. You can browse through theme-oriented book lists, look for outstanding titles in Best Fiction, or learn more about books and authors through Author Read-alikes, Feature Articles, Book Discussion Guides, and BookTalks. NoveList contains materials for all ages including picture books, children's "chapter books", teen titles, and books for adult readers. NoveList is updated monthly.

The Problem
According to the most recent census information there are 13,000 adults in Bay County who may not be able to read street signs, job applications, newspapers, grocery labels, books or instructions on medicine bottles.
They are part of a larger problem where, nationwide, more than 25 million Americans are defined as functionally illiterate.
These people are unable to understand the basics of reading, writing, arithmetic and science well enough to be able to perform ordinary tasks related to everyday life.
A literate community collectively benefits through secure employment, economic and cultural growth and being able to meet the challenges of a changing society.
The Community Response
In May 1986, 15 organizations and concerned individuals formed the Literacy Council of Bay County. The council's goal to work toward eliminating illiteracy is supported by the following objectives:
- To raise public awareness of the problem.
- To train volunteer tutors to teach adults how to read.
- To make successful matches between tutors and adult learners.
- To seek ongoing funding.
Tutors Help Adults Help Themselves
Since the Literacy Council began, hundreds of volunteers have been matched with adult learners.
Tutoring occurs, normally, once per week, in donated community space -- in libraries, churches, union halls, township halls, businesses, and other community locations.
You Can Help
Can you read this web page? Do you have a desire to help adults learn to read? Are you willing to attend 12 hours of free training? Have you earned your high school diploma or GED certificate? Can you meet with an adult student for two hours per week?
If so, you'd make a great tutor. Call now (989-686-8700) to learn more about training.
The Literacy Council also needs other volunteers, especially to help with office work.
Programs like this cost money. Books and teaching materials for one tutor and one student cost about $120. The Literacy Council of Bay County needs your financial support. Can you make a donation?
Facts About Illiteracy
Did you know that:
- On average, an illiterate adult earns 42 percent less than a high school graduate.
- More than $5 billion is spent each year to support welfare recipients who are unemployed because of illiteracy.
- Nearly 85 percent of all juveniles who have trouble with the law also have trouble with reading.
- Nearly 50 percent of the prison population is illiterate.

Web Catalogs & Directories:
Michigan Electronic Library is an online information system that provides residents of Michigan with access to a basic set of electronic resources. MEL's 'virtual library' is selected by librarians and is designed to be a significant information tool for the state's libraries and its citizens. This selective catalog of the web is divided into subject categories and provides listings of websites on a wide range of subjects such as gardening, consumer education, photography, politics, movies, and many MANY others. It's a great place to start your information search. Has a strong section on Michigan and Michigan government. Searchable, but only the subjects, titles, and descriptions of the sites are searched. A search in MEL does not search the actual sites that are listed.
The Librarians' Index to the Internet (LII) is a "searchable, annotated subject directory of more than 8,600 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries."
FirstGov is the federal government's web catalog of U.S. Government sites. A good place to start your search for government information and services.
The Internet Public Library was the first public library of and for the internet community. It started out as a project of the students and faculty at the School of Information and Library Studies at the University of Michigan. Part of IPL's mission is to "...serve the public by finding, evaluating, selecting, organizing, describing, and creating quality information resources."
Accoring to PC Magazine, "when you need facts, turn to Refdesk.com. From its plain but crowded home page, you can gain quick access to online dictionaries, encyclopedias, and myriad other reference sources: the day's leading news stories, popular search engines, and more. Think of it as Yahoo! crossed with your local librarian."
Yahoo! is one of the original "subject catalogs" of the net. A wide variety of sites are included. You can browse through the subject categories or use Yahoo's search engine.
KidsClick! was created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System, as a means of guiding their young users to valuable and age appropriate web sites.
"Great Sites" is produced by the American Library Association's Association of Library Service to Children and provides links to "...amazing, spectacular, mysterious, colorful websites for kids and the adults who care about them."
