Winter is the perfect season for reading together when the weather outside is frightful! Here are some seasonal picture book selections for the whole family from the BCLS children’s department staff:
Winter
More than just another color book, Sugar White Snow and Evergreens: A Winter Wonderland of Color by Felicia Sanzari Chernesky follows a family from their home out to a farm where maple sugar is being collected. With vivid imagery and bright pictures, this rhyming book is a great choice for a classroom read aloud.
In Waiting for Winter by Sebastian Meschenmoser, Squirrel has never seen winter before and learns from Deer that snow is “white and wet and cold and soft”. After passing the storm by exercising alone, singing sea shanties with Hedgehog, Bear suggests going out into the forest separately to look for snow. They each come back with someone that is white or wet or cold or soft, but is a toothbrush or smelly sock snow? Will it ever snow in the forest? A good pick for elementary aged children who will appreciate the humor.
Winter Sports
A great choice for toddlers and young children in families that enjoy winter sports, as well as emergent readers, is On My Skis by Kari-Lynn Winters. In this rhyming story, a young skier describes the sights and sounds of their family mountain trip. For families with older children, try Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen, a hilariously over-the-mountain-top romp, featuring a skier and his dog being stuck upside down hanging across a ravine with a moose looking down at them.
