Parents and caregivers, we have an exciting announcement just for you and your little ones! Our Ice Cream Parlor at the Auburn Area Branch Library is open for business, ready to beat the summer heat with a scoop of imagination. 🌞🍦

Thanks to our friends at Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Company, our Dramatic Play Station now features 14 delicious "flavors" of ice cream for endless creative play!

What is Dramatic Play?

Dramatic play, also known as pretend play, is a type of play where children take on different roles and act out scenarios. It’s a powerful way for kids to develop social skills, enhance their imagination, and learn about the world around them. By pretending to be different characters and engaging in make-believe situations, children build language skills, problem-solving abilities, and emotional intelligence.

How to Play Ice Cream Shop with Your Child

Playing ice cream shop at our Dramatic Play Station is not only fun but also educational! Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. Set Up the Shop: Help your child set up the ice cream parlor with pretend ice cream cones, scoops, and toppings. Arrange the 14 flavors on display and create a menu with prices.

  2. Role Play: Take turns being the shopkeeper and the customer. Encourage your child to greet customers, take orders, and "scoop" the ice cream. You can also introduce the concept of money by paying for your ice cream with pretend coins and bills.

  3. Create Scenarios: Invent different scenarios to keep the play dynamic. Maybe a big birthday party order comes in, or a customer requests a special sundae with extra toppings. This keeps the play engaging and allows for problem-solving and creativity.

  4. Mix and Match Flavors: Encourage your child to create unique ice cream combinations. They can even name their new flavors and describe them to customers. This enhances their vocabulary and descriptive skills.

  5. Counting and Math Skills: Use the ice cream shop to practice counting and basic math. Count the scoops, add up the prices, and make change. It’s a playful way to integrate learning into fun.
