The Great Saginaw Fire of 1893

Join Tom Trombley, Vice President and Chief Historian at the Castle Museum of Saginaw County to learn about The Great Saginaw Fire of 1893.  On May 20, 1893, a fire destroyed over 250 homes in Saginaw leaving behind block after block of crumbling foundations and ashes. Local tradition holds that the community refused all outside assistance and made a quick, almost phoenix-like, recovery from the disaster. In 2011 the Castle Museum’s archaeologist and volunteers excavated the basement of a house destroyed in the conflagration and revealed a very different story. In fact, Saginaw had a declining population and was struggling economically and it would take at least 10 years for the neighborhood to be completely rebuilt.
